UPDATES: On the Move, 5/3/11

Today, after 28 years at the Church of the Covenant, the Women’s Lunch Place opened its doors at Old South Church, our temporary home during renovations.
Like any move, ours was a busy one. Guests spent the morning downstairs, where they could eat breakfast, read a book, or take advantage of our advocacy and creative expressions programs. They named the space “Connie’s Café”―Connie, our creative expressions coordinator, is stationed there― no doubt as a term of endearment. Until June 16, guests will enjoy Connie’s Café from 7:00am to 11:00am before proceeding to the main hall, where lunch is served (starting June 16, both the basement and the main hall will open at 7:00am).

Guests graced our hall in eager numbers; about 125 women ate lunch, and their cheer reflected the solidarity of our old dining room. Indeed, Josh Birdsall, our full-time chef, observed “a lot of smiles” at our tables. Even after a health inspection at 10:00am, lunch was served promptly at noon. Since time was scarce, guests ate sandwiches, although they can expect the usual fare (curry-seasoned haddock and vegetarian frittatas, for example) tomorrow.
Overall, spirits were high, operations seamless. It seems that guests appreciate their temporary home, as do we; The Women’s Lunch Place is beholden to Old South Church for opening their doors with such enthusiasm. In the coming months, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue our renovation without halting our services. If this first day is any indication, we and our guests should be able to do so with aplomb.

The Boston Courant continued its coverage as we prepared for the big move to Old South Church. In an interview with Lauren Reilly, Director of Development, the need for a renovation became even clearer. This article appeared in the March 11 – March 17 edition of the Courant.
